description The barriers to women’s career progression and what organisations can do to tackle these limitations are important subjects explored in literature. While women have been identified as a minority in the senior roles of accountancy, there is minimal research into why this phenomenon continues to be a problem. This research project aims to explore the experiences of female qualified accountants to highlight the challenges they are facing in career progression. Subsequently, using their suggestions and those of the relevant literature, recommendations are made as to what organisational implementations will be best suited to women in accountancy. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews were conducted on 14 female qualified accountants to reveal their experiences and understand their thoughts on the barriers they may be facing. The findings reveal expected barriers such as maternity and gendered behavioural ideals, as well as results less common in literature such as the symptoms of menopause. Furthermore, participants’ opinions on organisational implementations were significant in guiding the recommendations made, consisting of paternity leave practices and flexible working adapted to the needs of each employee.
