Sexual dimorphism in neutrophils of three species of primates

A morphological sex difference in the nuclei of polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes in Macaca foscicularis, Presbytis melalophos and Hylobates lar is described. Neutrophils of female monkeys showed a solitary round appendage 1.3-1.6 u in diameter with a drumstick form attached to a lobe of the n...

description A morphological sex difference in the nuclei of polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes in Macaca foscicularis, Presbytis melalophos and Hylobates lar is described. Neutrophils of female monkeys showed a solitary round appendage 1.3-1.6 u in diameter with a drumstick form attached to a lobe of the nucleus by a narrow stalk. The incidence of this drumstick-like appendage was 2.6.±. 0.3%, 2.0 .±. 0.1% and 3.1 ±.0.3% in M. fascicularis, P. melalophos and H. lar respectively. Other aberrant forms of the typical drumstick such as rackets, sessile nodules and clubs occurred in both sexes of each species. A minimum of 500 leukocytes per animal had to be examined to arrive at a reliable sex difference.
