Summary:Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are pathogens which cause gastroenteritis and other diseases to human. Wild birds and rodents in our environment play some role in transmitting these pathogenic bacteria to human. Hence, a study was carried out to determine the prevalence of V cholerae and V parahaemolyticus in wild birds and rodents from disturbed and pristine area. The birds and rodents from disturbed (Ta-ann Naman plantation in Sibu) and pristine habitat (Mt. Mulu) was captured and cloacal swab from each animal were collected. Isolation and identification was done on Thiosulphate Citrate Bile Salt agar and some biochemical test will be done do determine the bacteria species. Multiplex PCR was carried out to screen for the virulence genes of V cholerae which are tcp, ctx, zot and ace. As for V parahaemolyticus, the virulence gene are tdh and trh. The outcome is that the most of the samples collected from disturbed habitat were found to contain Vibrio spp. as compare to the samples collected from pristine habitat. Besides, not all the isolates of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus contain virulence gene.
