description This study aims to investigate the feasibility of year-round continuing professional development (CPD) for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teachers on short-term contracts for pre-sessional courses. Issues indicated in previous research regarding time constraints during pre-sessional courses, teacher motivation, and differing needs and wants concerning CPD had provoked the question of whether a solution could be found by engagement in CPD during the rest of the year. The present study therefore looks at reasons why CPD throughout the year may be an option and at existing opportunities for such CPD plus their usefulness, along with issues regarding engagement in these. The research was carried out by conducting a survey consisting of an online questionnaire, with both closed and open-ended questions, which was responded to by pre-sessional teachers working or having worked on short-term contracts. The results indicated that, although the majority of participants would prefer to engage in CPD during course or induction periods, opportunities at this time are often limited due to the shortness of courses, time constraints and heavy workload. As a result, there was some interest in year-round CPD and acknowledgement of its usefulness, but it was not always seen as feasible owing to other work commitments and consequent lack of time, cost and lack of institutional support. There was also low motivation in some cases due to lack of job prospects. The findings also showed that certain types of CPD, such as reading about the subject, conducting research and studying for an EAP qualification, were valued more than others. Recommendations are that institutions be more supportive and encouraging of short-term contract teachers in their quest for ongoing CPD outside their contract period, acknowledging the importance of this and understanding the related issues concerning motivation, time constraints, funding and access.
