description Executive Summary The theme of this paper is about formulating strategies in a systematic way that incorporates multiple views of the future’s outlook. The methodology for the paper used the case study of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd to illustrate how this can be achieved, through a strategy making method called scenario planning. There is a real danger of dealing with turbulence by continuing on the same path that was devised using yesterday’s logic. The company has been exporting for several years now with the same strategies and have consistently failed to achieve their ambitions. Considering, the new changes in the environment and the pressure to grow, the turbulence faced and the lack of a successfully implemented strategy, are the motivations behind suggesting a rethink of the company’s strategic approach. This approach to strategy making would enable Beximco Pharma’s top management to anticipate how the turbulent changes in the pharmaceutical world impact their ambitions of internationalization. The literature review provided an overview of strategy and scenario planning, and what is to be gained from it. The paper highlights that even if plans are well thought of, the capabilities and resources need to be a match with the environment. Also for successful implementation there needs to be systems and the appropriate structures in place. The final outputs of this paper are to provide a starting point and make it approachable for the company to adopt scenario-planning exercises internally in the future; provide insights into the case study’s internal and external environments to establish plausible scenarios for the future of the generic pharmaceutical industry; and finally integrate scenario-based recommendations into BPL’s strategic planning.
