Design/methodology/approach – The proposed improvement analysis will be based on the case study of the Nigerian National Oil Corporation. It contains a literature review of the characteristics of the oil supply chain. It involves the use of established qualitative research tools such as the use of semi-structured interviews and multiple documentations for triangulation of facts. The methodology used was initiated by developing an analytic strategy, which involves the use of coding procedures, SWOT analysis framework and Porters Five Forces analysis.
Findings – Attention was drawn to 5 main causes affecting the operational performance: lack of control across the supply chain, presence of fraud and corruption, low level of commitment from suppliers/partners, poor communications between departments and poor infrastructure. Using SWOT analysis framework and Porters Five Forces, the following improvement initiatives were suggested: the implementation of risk mitigation strategy, the use of an effective supplier/partner selection process, distribution channel optimization, utilization of new technology to streamline the supply chain and effective regulations of the oil industry.
Originality/value – There is a limited number of references on the selected topic, that is to say there is little or no research made in the field of the oil supply chain management in Nigeria, therefore, under this impression, this research could be used as used as a pilot case study upon which further researches can be made. This dissertation would contribute toward the knowledge of supply chain issues found in Nigeria and it would be of benefit to other developing countries which are exploring ways to optimize their supply chain performance level.
