Fabrication of 316L stainless steel foams via powder metallurgy technique

Metal foam is the cellular structures that made from metal and have pores in their structures. Metal foam also known as the porous metals, which express that the structure has a large volume of porosities with the value of up to 0.98 or 0.99. Porous 316L stainless steel was fabricated by powder meta...

Metal foam also known as the porous metals, which express that the structure has a large volume of porosities with the value of up to 0.98 or 0.99. Porous 316L stainless steel was fabricated by powder metallurgy route with varied composition between 75 wt% to 100 wt% of the SS316L metal powder as a main material, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Carbamide as a space holder. The powders were mixed in a ball milling machine at 60 rpm for 10 minutes and the mixtures were put into the mould for the pressing. The samples were uniaxially pressed at 3 tons and heat treated by using box furnace at 870 °C. There are several tests that have been conducted in order to characterize the physical properties of 316L stainless steel foam such as density and porosity tests and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for the morphological test. The result shows that the sample with 75 wt% of SS316L stainless steel foam is highest of porosity which suitable for implants application. 2015 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed application/pdf http://eprints.uthm.edu.my/7314/1/1150.pdf Abdullah, Z. and Ahmad, Sufizar and Rafter, M.
