Prevailing vitamin D status influences mitochondrial and glycolytic bioenergetics in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from adults

•A model linking vitamin D status and the bioenergetic profile of PBMCs is proposed.•Adults with <50 nmol/L had greater oxidative and glycolytic metabolism.•Bioenergetic Health Index was positively related to fasting insulin sensitivity.
