•NetB from Clostridium perfringens is the major virulence factor in avian necrotic enteritis.•Vaccination with a NetB genetic or formaldehyde toxoid protects chicken in an in vivo disease model.•NetB toxoids could form the bases of an efficient vaccine against necrotic enteritis.
