| Summary: | Wetlands provide environmental and social values such as habitats for many plants
and animals, including threatened and endangered species; flood storage and storm
water regulation; groundwater recharge and others from erosion. In the past two
decades, managing and rising the general level of environmental awareness on all
levels of society has become one of the main social goals that have reached a level of
social and political consensus unseen ever before. The purpose of this research are, to
identify the environmental awareness level toward Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu and
to examine the relationship of wetland background and wetland issues towards
environmental awareness among public people on Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu. The
researcher developed two research objectives and two research questions based on the
conceptual framework. Independent variables which are wetland background and
wetland issues. The dependent variable is environmental awareness. Convenience
sampling technique was used involving 535 respondents with the aid of questionnaires.
Findings from this study indicated that wetland issues and wetland background
significantly associated with environmental awareness. On the other hand, the
researcher found that wetland issues as the most influential factor towards
environmental awareness compare with wetland background. Findings obtained from
this study have provided several suggestions for the future research to ensure the
policy maker includes Terengganu State Government, can properly conserve and
manage Setiu Wetlands in good manner.
