description This research reviews the concept of adequate compensation in land acquisition. The definition of value to the landowners is closely related to the real meaning of adequate compensation with reference to heads of claims in land acquisition. It also examines the practical application of valuation practices in determining adequate compensation to affected landowners. The main focus is on the aspect of the way in which affected landowners are expecting their worth of land and property interests in the open market. It concentrates on the overall perceptions of the affected landowners. Data is gathered from valuation reports prepared by private and public valuers and documents from land administrators in the case study in Melaka. Then, data will be analysed using qualitative analysis to show the differences in the valuation prepared by valuers and awards granted by land administrators. The findings show that there are differences between values determined by private and public valuers and award granted by land administrators. The differences are due to the factors considered in the valuation for compensation that influence the acceptance of the landowners to supply the land for development in the case study areas. Hence, further ways and means to smoothen the supply of land for development are inevitably important to make more potential land available for public purpose development.
