hours after patient’s admission and within 30 days of discharge. In order to prevent the
nosocomial infection spreading, the standard precautions is one of the ways to minimize
the risk of infections. Thus, this study was aimed to compare the knowledge and
practices about standard precaution in preventing the nosocomial infections among final
year nursing and medical students in USM. Moreover, the researcher also wants to
compare the association between selected socio-demographic data (type of enrollment
of programme and gender) with knowledge and practices of standard precaution in
preventing the nosocomial infections among final year nursing and medical students in
USM. There were 177 respondents which is nursing students (42) and medical students
(135) included in this study. There was significant difference in mean level of
knowledge with standard precautions among nursing students (95.95) and medical
students (86.27) at USM. There was significant difference in mean level of practice with
standard precaution among nursing students (84.83) and medical students (76.06) at
USM. There was no significant association between type of enrollment programme with
level of knowledge of standard precaution for both programme (p=0.065). But, there
was significant association between the enrollment programme with practice of standard
precaution (p-0.019). Lastly, there was no significant association between gender with
level of knowledge and practices of standard precautions in preventing nosocomial infections for both of programs. The researcher conclude that the level of knowledge
and practices among the students were excellent but still need to increase the knowledge
and practices. Hence, educational program can be conducted to increase the level of
knowledge and practices about standard precautions among nursing and medical
students at USM. |
