| description | Quality control of edible birdnest (EBN) are both a priority and an asset to trade. It requires a holistic approach from point of production of this raw-unclean edible birdnest (EBN) to consumption. The Department of Veterinary Services Malaysia (DVS)had outlined the Guide Documents quality assurance systems of EBN premises output (ranches and caves) for ‘animal product food safety’. This document Good Animal Husbandry Practice-Edible-nest Swiflet Ranching and its Premises (MS 2273:2013) addresses the biosecurity and phyto and sanitary, animal health, welfare, socioeconomic and environmental parameters. As for raw-unclean EBN, raw-clean EBN and further process, the DVS has emplaced Good Veterinary Health Practices (GVHP) and Veterinary Health Mark (VHM) assurance schemes. EBN contain about 5-10% of sialic acid which is N-acetyl-neuraminic acid (Ogura, 2011). The glycoprotein also called gluco-protein on viruses’ surface acts as a good antigen (Guoet al., 2006). The process of EBN must take into consideration as not to destroy or denature these elements. High in demand and highly priced in the global market, EBN ranching has increased dramatically in Malaysia since 2000. In South-East Asia, EBN is a commodity of considerable economic endeavour (Sharon, 2008). The yard stick base on the quality of EBN produce and products assuarance is exemplify by its pricing at world market. |
