Summary:The Goldenberry (Physalis peruviana L.) is well known due to its highly nutritious fruit with functional food value and medicinal benefits. P. peruviana is regarded as one of the most widely employed folk medicinal plants world over. Ethnotherapeutic and ethno medicinal uses of this species are well documented with scientific basis of wide classes of identified phytochemicals. Data shows that P. peruviana is used worldwide as a natural phytomedicine to cure different ailments. A long list of phytochemicals including terpenes, phenolics, alkaloids, esters and lipids are reported in different parts of this species. P. peruviana possesses a rich profile of broad range of high-value phytochemicals such as flavonoids, physalins, alkaloids, vitamins, carotenoids, and polysaccharides among others and is packed with an abundance of essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. The purpose of this chapter is to mainly cover the nutritional, nutraceutical and phytochemicals aspects as well as biological attributes of P. peruviana aiming to explore functional food and nutra-pharmaceutical prospects of this highly valuable fruit crop.
