Description
Summary:The objective of this study was to determine the sediment oxygen demand and sediment characteristics of the Santubong River. This study aimed to examine the relations between sediment oxygen demands and the sediment characteristics of the Santubong river due to human activities in the watershed. Particle size analysis was also conducted in order to determine the content of clay, silt and sand in the bottom sediment of Santubong river. The highest clay content was from station 2, while for silt and sand, the stations that gave the highest content was from station 5 and 1 respectively. The organic matter and organic carbon gave a positive correlation with the sediment oxygen demand. Total phosphorus determined from the orthophosphorus phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total ammoniacal nitrogen, total organic nitrogen, all shows a significant difference among the stations. For heavy metals, the sediments samples were taken at five stations along the river bank, the station that has the most lead concentration were station 3, station 1 and station 5, nickel and chromium respectively. The station with the highest SOD was obtained from station 1 and the lowest from station 5.
