Summary:Forty six isolates of bacteria were isolated from food sources collected markets in Kota Samarahan and Satok. The food sources analysed were chicken meat, seafood and processed food. Out of the 46 isolates, 10 were randomly chosen and identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. The confirmed isolates were characterised by (GTG)5 PCR and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the isolates were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter amnigenus, Enterobacter cloacae, and Enterobacter cancerogenus. The phylogenetic analysis based on the (GTG)5 PCR showed that the isolates were clustered into 3 main groups which were further subclustered into minor groups or individual isolates. The antibiotic resistance showed that the isolates were resistant towards ampicillin (10μg), sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim (25μg), carbenicillin (100μg), norfloxacin (10μg), chloramphenicol (30μg), streptomycin (10μg), tetracycline (30μg), nitrofurantoin (300μg) and kanamycin (30μg). All of the isolates tested were found to be sensitive towards nalidixic acid (30μg). The results of this study indicate the usefulness of the 16S rRNA in identifying the bacterial isolates and (GTG)5 PCR in grouping them. This study has revealed the potential risk associated with antibiotic resistance bacteria from food sources.
