description TRANFORMASI: TRANSFORMING SARAWAK HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS INTO CONTEMPORARY ARTS Aligning Sarawak's historical context with contemporary art is both tempting and challenging, as our connection to the past grows increasingly distant. This exhibition, Tranformasi, explores whether archived memories—specifically historical photographs—can be artistically transformed into contemporary works to foster a deeper understanding of our shared past. With support from institutions like the National Visual Arts Gallery, Sarawak State Library, National Archives of Malaysia (Sarawak Branch), UNIMAS, and the state government, this exhibition emphasizes the importance of transforming archival images into accessible, thought-provoking art. Held for the first time at the Sarawak State Library, Tranformasi showcases works by UNIMAS lecturers who reinterpret archival photographs and documents to explore identity, memory, history, and loss. The idea emerged following concerns from the National Archives about the digital disconnection of archival photographs and the risk of deterioration. Displaying originals could lead to further damage, thus artistic reinterpretation offers a compelling solution. This exhibition features paintings, sculptures, digital art, and photography-based works from diverse artists, aiming to reimagine Sarawak’s historical imagery for public engagement.
