single seed was 0.006 g and it was estimated that one kg weight contained approximately 166,666
seeds. This showed that the seeds used in this study were very small and light. Three types of priming
treatments used were hydropriming, thermopriming and chemopriming. Priming agents included
distilled water, water bath at 40 oC, ascorbic acid and ethanol, were used to prime the seeds for periods
of 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours and evaluated for the moisture content and germination. Results showed
that the highest moisture content percentage for hydropriming was 78.5 %, thermopriming was 87.74
%, and chemopriming using ethanol was 75.76 % and 75.06 % using ascorbic acid. Thermoprimed
seeds at 40 oC gave the highest germination percentage than other treatments that was 98.75 % at 24
hours of priming. Generally, germination was increased and more uniform in all types of priming
treatments which indicated that seeds were exposed to favourable condition and achieved the best
physiological state for germination. |
