Often misunderstandings happen in society (between individuals or ethnic groups) on account of stereotype patterns and prejudice that can stimulate dissosiative relationships. But social interactions can just as well bring about associative relationships. Pontianak is a heterogeneous area, characterized by a multicultural society; it is highly vulnerable to dissosiative relationships which caan trigger ethic conflict such as the riots between the Malay and Madurese communities in October 2000 on account of economic, social and political competition between ethnic groups. As a result, many children, a women and people were innocent victims to violence. During the ethnic riots, Madurese symbols were destroyed and burned. As well, there was widespread resentment towards those of Madura ethnic descent, especially those living in Pontianak. |
