description Health monitoring applications in clinical environment include various areas such as respiration assessment, heart rate monitoring, gait monitoring, spine bending as well as lower and upper limb motion detections. In example, for human spine monitoring application, many accurate and highly reliable devices are widely available for this application, such as computer tomography, fluoroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging technology, but they are potentially hazardous for repetitive use as well as being expansive for wide application. Alternatively, various non-invasive devices have been introduced including optical fiber-based sensor. Other possible application using optical fiber in health monitoring application in respiration rate measurement. In this research, a low-cost plastic optical fibre respiration sensor based on the intensity modulation is investigated, via the longitudinal displacement measurement of the input and output fibers during respiration process. As the chest diameter changes when inhalation and exhalation process take place, the gap between fiber changes, which is recorded to provide continuous measurement of the respiration cycle. The sensor provides automatic intensity referencing which is important to maintain the accuracy and reliability of the proposed device. The inherited advantages of the optical fibre make it possible to develop a small probe size, lightweight, low costs as well as immune from electromagnetic interference, make it suitable for clinical application.
