| Summary: | This study is aimed to unravel the type of communication strategies used by Chinese
students at Chinese national-type schools while speaking in Malay language according
to a group of high, medium and low achiever students. The study involved 130 students
selected from eight Chinese national-type schools in Hulu Langat, Selangor through the
stratified sampling. Survey and observation through storytelling and role-play
techniques were used as an instrument to obtain the oral Malay language data from the
Chinese students. Students were required to tell a story based upon the picture of
picnicking on the beach. The second instrument was a role play regarding conversation
in a restaurant. This study has outlined a total of 17 types of communication strategies.
Monitor theory which was pioneered by Krashen (1982) and Tarone Taxonomy was
used for the classification of the communication strategies are Spoken Language
Communication Strategy and Non Spoken Language Communication Strategy. The
findings obtained via data transcription process showed that Chinese students inclined
to use more message abandonment compared to other type of communication strategies
as studied. The findings generally showed that more Chinese students were using the
Non Spoken Language Communication Strategy (70%) while Spoken Language
Communication Strategy (30%). They disliked abandoning or changing the topic
drastically when facing difficulties in finding the appropriate Malay language lexical
according to context. Finally, the results of this study proves that the usage of
communication strategy in teaching oral, as second language among the Chinese pupils
is influenced by their attitude, high motivation, usage and less exposure towards Malay
language and problems faced by the communication strategies. |
