| Summary: | Bahasa Melayu or Malay language is recognized as the official language of this country. The position and the status of Bahasa Melayu are enumerated in various legislations. Although this research specifically focused on the enforcement of bahasa Melayu but the approach taken is to determine on how far the society appreciate bahasa Melayu as their national language. There are various organisation and institutions which are directly related to
the issue on bahasa Melayu notably National Literary Bureau but the effectiveness of this body is still in questions because of it limited power in dealing with the issue of Bahasa Melayu. We sometimes happened to see in the local newspaper, billboards and in Electronic Medias that bahasa Melayu was treated half heartedly. But nobody
came into defence when Bahasa Melayu is not used properly. Most of us prefer to use other language rather than Bahasa Melayu. In contras, the western civilian such as the Americans and English are more aware of the position of their national language. As part of the public we
must aware about the position of Bahasa Melayu as the national language. All of us shared the same responsibilities in upholding bahasa Melayu as the national
language. |
