description Activated carbon was prepared from coconut coir and adsorption of textile dye Direct Red 105 by the activated carbon was examined. Batch adsorption test showed that extent of dye adsorption was dependent on dye concentration, contact time and pH. Equilibrium adsorption was attained in3 h and maximum adsorption occurred at pH 2. Adsorption capacity of the activated carbon for the direct dye was evaluated by batch equilibrium test and compared with that of other adsorbents reported in the literature. The adsorption data at optimum pH 2 for the coconut coir activated carbon was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir constants Q° and b were 12.7 and 0.65, and Freundlich constants Kf and 1/n were 5.2 and 0.3, respectively. Coconut coir activated carbon is an effective adsorbent for removal of direct dyes from aqueous solution.
