counsellor. This paper examines aspects of the diligence and value as components in
counsellor's competency dealing with gay and lesbian clients. Qualitative approach was used
in this research through case studies. Data collection was conducted using semi-structured in-depth interview. The study involved 15 participants. Data obtained was analyzed using
thematic analysis based on the objective. N’Vivo 11 software was used in assisting the
analysis process. Based on the findings, two themes emerged: (i) deligence and (ii) value. For
the theme deligence, three sub-themes emerged which are (i) experience, (ii) interest and (iii)
understanding the client’s problem, while for value two sub-themes were identified: (i) value
of religion and (ii) value of humanity. The study found that elements of diligence and value
are vital components to improve the competency of counsellors handling gays and lesbians
clients. This research may increase knowledge and awareness among counsellors who wishes
to extend their services to gay and lesbian clients. In addition, the finding from this research
is also hoped to provide counsellor educators with the guideline in enhancing competency
among future counsellors who wishes to focus on gay and lesbian clients. |
