description Being one of the oldest public functions in human history, markets always play important roles in urban space. Being the centre of trading, markets indicated the scale of cities. As cities emerged, markets were the economic centres of the city, as important as churches. But things are changing now, markets are in danger. The number of markets is declining, and many are struggling to survive facing the changes in the economic system. In Macau, multifunctional market buildings were designed to face modern challenges during the 1990s. This thesis is trying to evaluate this type of multifunctional market building to express whether it is still suitable for current situations. Discussing the conditions of multifunctional market buildings in Macau to explain the roles of supervisor elements in the system of markets and what to focus on designing multifunctional markets. Sensory cognitive research and POE research are applied in the research to demonstrate the current conditions of multifunctional markets in Macau and give some suggestions for further development.
