description In the current study, the relationship between financial support and the progress of S&T innovation in Fujian Province, China, was investigated. All data used in this study were obtained from CSMAR and Wind databases. The science and technology innovation index (STI) was constructed from selected S&T indicators through principal component analysis (PCA), with the aim of representing the growth of high-tech industry in Fujian Province. Then, a vector auto-regression (VAR) model was developed by regressing the STI index on the S&T finance-related variables collected in this study. The biggest drivers for the progress of S&T innovation come from the government and the banking system. Since the government plays a leading role in China's major banks, it can be concluded that the government plays a decisive contribution in the progress of S&T innovation in Fujian Province. As expected, empirical evident is also obtained from the fiscal data collected that GDP and S&T innovation has positive relationship. Interestingly, the regression result also indicates that the contribution from the investment of private sector is less important in the growth of S&T innovation. The reason behind this finding is complicated, which have beyond the scope of the current research project. However, it would be an interesting topic for the future research.
