description Social enterprise has gained increasing attraction in Malaysia. This study aims to understand the type of business model adopted by social enterprises in Malaysia and develop a framework for assessing the business model. Specifically, it investigates the parameters and factors that enable social entrepreneurs to achieve social or environmental outcomes and earn revenue. The design of a business model is vital in allowing social enterprises to achieve the additional goal of creating social value in addition to the economic value. It also permits the achievability of financial sustainability and the ability to scale. Additionally, a business environment that is favourable for social enterprise to flourish is essential for the development of business model. To provide an enabling ecosystem for the development of the social enterprise sector, a holistic view and informed insights on social enterprise business model type is required. Therefore, this study conducted multiple case studies of twelve social enterprises to examine the business model adopted to identify patterns of their practices through which social and economic goals are developed and reconfigured by data collected from secondary sources. The findings revealed that an adoption of combined business model type is more likely to generate reliable income sources without seeking external financing while some business model types require assistance in financing. It also provides evidence business model innovation in social enterprise enables the expansion of social missions and scaling its growth by leveraging on expertise and resources sharing. However, setting boundary conditions for mission trade-offs is important to avoid mission drift. Lastly, policy supports such as establishing subsidy and incentives system, better access to financing options based on types of business model and establishing network groups to connect social enterprises, institutions and other entities that focus on achieving similar impacts can provide a conducive environment for the growth and sustainability of the social enterprise sector.
