| Summary: | Environmental problems are one of the most serious problems facing contemporary society. Although sustainable development is not a new topic, greening has been developing and permeating almost every industry. Packaging is one of the elements of green development. There are many articles about green packaging, especially food packaging. However, the number of articles on the development of retailers' green packaging is relatively small. Packaging is a part of the retail industry and has been increasingly valued by customers in recent years. For this reason, retailers have taken various measures to develop green packaging.
The research of this dissertation is how retailers adopt green packaging measures and analyse the results. The research methods used are qualitative analysis and case study. This study takes Lidl, Tesco, and Waitrose as cases. The comparison is divided into five dimensions, material, design, technological innovation, recycling, and policies. Then these dimensions are divided into more detail. The dissertation used the “packaging scorecard” method to make the analysis more specific.
Finally, the overall performance of the three retailers was similar. Waitrose got the highest score, and its advantage is mainly reflected in the packaging design and technological innovation. All three retailers have adopted strategies to avoid unnecessary packaging, recycle packaging, and eliminate harmful packaging.
