| description | The Geographies of our worlds fundamentally changed as the Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing lockdowns set in across the globe. This thesis uses the sustainable fashion community of practice on Instagram as the empirical vessel through which to explore the changes that occurred during the pandemic. The ultimate aim of this thesis is to offer novel insights which are situated in the context of the pandemic about how a sustainable fashion agenda may be leveraged.
This thesis makes two key contributions. First, it makes a case for the recognition of the sustainable fashion community on Instagram as an online community of practice. Furthermore, I demonstrate how the practices associated with being in a community of practice, e.g. exchange, productive enquiry and building shared understanding, contribute to leveraging a sustainable fashion agenda for the sustainable fashion community of practice. I also demonstrate how the practices of blogging and influencing within the community contribute to leveraging a sustainable fashion agenda. Second, I demonstrate that the act of dress and the meaning of our clothes shifted during the pandemic, simultaneously recognising that reconnecting with the life, meaning and journeys of our garments helps to leverage sustainability in fashion, and that the sustainable fashion community too embody these approaches. |
