| Summary: | This dissertation attempts to explore the theoretical application of the concepts including resources, dynamic capabilities and innovation within the case study of Nokia, in this way to study the relationship between internal resources, capabilities and the innovation of the enterprise. The motivation for this research is to explore the influence of internal resources and dynamic capabilities on corporate innovation.
The theoretical framework of this research consisted of the resource-based view, dynamic capabilities view and innovation types. Based on a review of literature on these theories, research questions were presented and the research methodology was determined. This study analysed the characteristics and rigidity of internal resources and capabilities of the enterprise to explore the influence of them on different innovation types and performance.
The document review method was used to collect data on Nokia. Annual reports of the company were the primary source of data collection. Quarterly presentations and financial statements of Nokia were also selected as sources of data. Through the data collection of Nokia, internal resources, dynamic capabilities and innovation performance of Nokia were evaluated and analysed to explore the relationship among them.
The research result obtained through discussion in this study showed that in the rapidly changing external environment and the increasingly mature market, the incremental innovation according to mainstream technologies and products might be eliminated because it cannot enable the company to adapt to changes of the external environment. Therefore, the company should improve its dynamic capabilities to integrate and organise internal resources for radical innovation. Although radical innovation is risky, it can bring great opportunities to the enterprise.
