description In this modern competitive business world, each organization, regardless of the industrial differences, must be strategic in its performance. Innovation is one of the strategic decisions of the organization by which companies can achieve competitive advantage. CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) of the companies are the key players who engage themselves in the strategic decision and initiate the innovation strategy. The background characteristics set the mental models of the CEO which contribute to the cognitive ability and decision-making process. As a developing country, Bangladesh is undergoing lots of technological advancement and innovation of products or services. For this reason, this study has been conducted to understand the influence of characteristics of the CEO on innovation strategy focusing on the banking service sector of Bangladesh. There are 20 banks of Bangladesh and their CEOs in 5 years (2014-2018) selected as observations of this study. Mainly, there are three characteristics of the CEO which have been investigated in this research study namely experience level, tenure as CEO and overseas education of the CEOs. It has been found that these variables significantly influence innovation in the banking service sector. Research outcome reveals that the direction of influence of the experience level and overseas education is positive on innovation strategy. In contrast, longer-tenured CEOs tend to be less innovative which is another important finding of the study. The managerial implications of this research have been mentioned in this dissertation. The future research opportunities and direction regarding this study have also been discussed in this report.
