description Aiming to identify a suitable and updated benchmarking model, this paper initially entails an exhaustive literature review of benchmarking-related topics. After an evaluation of different benchmarking models found on the literature, a model entailing the best practices of the best in the literature, was identified and proposed as the path for this research. Based on this model, a focus on phase 5, 6 and 7 was given to this paper. For the main purpose of identifying appropriate and modern techniques for the achievement of these phases, which actually together answer to the question of what to benchmark and from whom do so. Finally, an application of this model on sea ports was elaborated. Concluding with relevant results for the validation of the techniques used on the model as self-assessment and decision-making tools. Besides from the findings related to the definition of what to benchmark in ports.
