description The automotive industry is one of the most innovative industries with many several technologies coming together in an automobile. The automobile has now evolved from a transportation focussed industry to a technology focussed industry. The annual reports, financial reports of Global Automakers are unclear in terms of innovation and predicting future trends in technology domains in the industry. By using Patent data one can model the future as it serves as a global technology database or library for innovation and technology along with it being statistically proven data and very accurate. This report will first draw a methodology by combining literature on extraction of key patent data such as patent indicators to be seen and then segregate this data to extract statistical data on Automotive Body and Seating technologies. This methodology and procedure can be used for future research to draw similar data from another other hot topics or technologies in the industry. The key questions to be answered in this report would be identifying which industry is dominating the patent filings or innovation activities in these technologies. In the automotive body technologies we have seen a complete dominance of Automotive OEMs holding majority of the patents with global players like Honda, Toyota, General Motors and Ford the top companies investing in this technologies. In the Seating Technologies, we see the dominance of Seat Assemblers or Tier1 Suppliers such as Johnson Controls, Lear Corporation, Toyota Boshuku & Faurecia etc. dominate with lesser filings by the Automotive OEMs in this space. This report gives statistical proof of upward or downward patenting trends by giving overview of the patenting trends of the OEMs, Seat Assemblers, Component and Material Suppliers along with other active players from other industries over the last decade. Along with the Patent Distribution by industry and the Patenting Trend of these industries, the top innovators or top patent assignees in each industry are analysed to give a list of the most innovative OEMs to monitor or most innovative suppliers to partner with in the future. The analysis is completed with looking at the macro or external environment to foresee present or future factors that are or will affect the innovation and patenting activity. The data extracted from the analysis will be discussed by placing the top innovative suppliers in the Krajlic (1983) Matrix and suitable conclusions and options will be presented to Jaguar Land Rover with regards to the Automotive Body and Seating Technologies
