description This paper aims to analyse and compare the organizational atmosphere for Chinese graduates who have overseas degrees and/or work experience abroad in two types of firms in China: Western multinational corporations (MNCs) and Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The research is focused on the Chinese consumer goods industry, and Mars China and China Resources Vanguard Shop (CRVS) were selected for the case study. Ten telephone interviews were used. Participants included recent graduates and human resource (HR) managers of Mars China and CRVS. Other academic resources were collected as secondary data to supplement the interview results. The key findings suggest that Chinese students with overseas experience seem to be more accommodated to foreign firms than local Chinese graduates. In contrast, local Chinese graduates are more acclimatized to Chinese firms than overseas Chinese graduates. Traditional Chinese managerial cultures and rules still have continuous and considerable impact on modern HRM systems in Chinese firms. Chinese social values appear to have considerable influence on the work values of young Chinese graduates. Findings of the dissertation offers useful suggestions for the adaptation of HRM practices in Chinese and Western enterprises when facing applicants with mixed educational backgrounds. This dissertation fills a gap in the existing literature, which offers only limited discussion of the differences in HRM practices between Chinese enterprises and Western MNCs in the Chinese consumer goods sector. Keywords -- HRM, Western MNCs, Chinese SOEs, consumer goods industry, Chinese graduates, overseas degrees
