description The private sector has increasingly been viewed as the engine for growth and development. The primary purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of what role the private sector plays in development and in particular, it seeks to examine whether the impact of private sector Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and interventions can contribute towards the realisation of Kenya’s Vision 2030. To do so, the study analysed the web contents of fourteen selected companies operating in Kenya to examine their motivation to undertake CSR and how their CSR initiatives and interventions contributed to the attainment of the three pillars of Vision 2030 that is the economic, social and political pillars. It is evident from the research findings that the private sector in Kenya has contributed to development in various ways. The most dominant approach adopted by most Kenyan companies is voluntary contributions mainly through philanthropic donations and sponsorships. However, the study also reveals that there is an emergence of some strategic CSR interventions that create impact in the society both through their operations as well as through their supply chain. The study also established that most of the interventions supported the realisation of the social and economic pillars of Vision 2030, with less contribution made towards attainment of the political pillar targets. Furthermore, this study established no significant difference between the contributions made by companies signed to the UN Global Compact and those that have not signed to the initiative with the exception of gender diversity in corporate boards. The research concludes that the private sector is contributing immensely to development in Kenya through their CSR programs, even though the government has played limited role in promoting CSR. Vision 2030 secretariat should therefore endeavour to promote CSR at the same time improve on public & private partnerships to accelerate development. Key Words: Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate citizenship, private sector development, Vision 2030.
