In just a few years’ time, waves of consolidation and modernization have fundamentally altered the industry’s landscape. While regulatory change was noted as the driving force behind the transformation, there were nevertheless other forces at work as well. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze these forces individually and collectively, and then single out IT to determine its roles and impact on the transformation. While this study covers many general aspects of the banking industry, special attentions are given to the commercial banking business. To systematically and objectively examine the driving forces behind the industry transformation, this study looks at the industry on 3 different levels. The first level involves gaining an overall view of the industry. These include learning about the state, changes and outlook of the industry. The second level focuses on the macro and micro level changes of the industry. Both industry and firm-level issues are examined here. On this level, a theoretical framework is used to study the past changes and predict the future changes within the industry. Finally, the third level of this study involves examining the relationship between IT and the industry change, particularly with regard to how IT might have influenced various fundamental aspects of the industry. By taking a holistic and structured approach, it is hoped that the study would offer some valuable insights on the influence of IT on the banking industry’s transformation. |
