| description | Malaysia, being the hub of ASEAN countries and with no political unrest in the region has been the focus of many foreign and local investments. The government is promoting the cluster concept called as, MSC region through tax exemptions, grants and many other incentives. Cyberjaya is a part of that cluster which is a base for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and is a home to many multinationals and small medium enterprises (SME). They study was based on the SME’s located in Cyberjaya which revealed the factors which made these SME’s successful in this cluster and the conditions and linkages which aided in their startup. The perceptions of the companies Heads about the region which supported their decision to be in Cyberjaya was also taken into consideration. The companies which were chosen for this purpose were AJV Holdings, Geoflex, MSC Technologies, Ace Touchtone and Webonline Dot Com. From the interviews of personnel for the research, it was found that the government has provided many incentives for the SME’s who fulfill the criteria to have the MSC status and help them throughout their way in getting the contracts, making arrangement for the business meetings and promoting their products locally and internationally. In addition, it came out that not many of the companies were having any linkages with the main actors such as MNC’s in Cyberjaya. Most of them were relying on their own in-house technology to build their abilities. R&D and innovation were the concepts which were slowly taking take off and companies were thinking about to produce something new to be able to market their product outside the Malaysian market. It is believed that R&D and innovation along with the continuous support from the government sector will play an increasingly important role. The convergence of the three main actors; firms, universities and government bodies will create new growth opportunities for SME’s in the ICT sector in Cyebrjaya, Malaysia. |
