| Summary: | The purpose of this dissertation was to identify the strategies and techniques mentioned in demand management and capacity management fields by a thorough search of the literature to improve operations and increase efficiency in a surgical specialty, which was decided to be the Urology Department of Nottingham City Hospital. The main reason in targeting urology department for improvements was a result of the literature review, as the said department was considered to have more routine and flow-like operations, and standardized procedures.
To carry out the project, data was collected, first by a literature review, which constitutes the main body of this dissertation, and then, by an interview, which was conducted with Consultant Urological Surgeon Dr. Richard Parkinson from the Urology Department of Nottingham City Hospital.
The analysis of the data collected showed that the problems in the Urology Department of Nottingham City Hospital were in fact parallel to the issues addressed in the literature. The discussion then moved on to identify the solutions found in the literature that could be applicable to the problems found in the actual case.
In conclusion, the dissertation suggests that besides the recommendations described in this study to improve operations in the Urology Department, a more detailed case study would be beneficial to test the applicability of the suggestions.
