description This research sheds light upon various characteristics of SMEs and their distinctive behavioural patterns in the process of exporting and managing their resources. The case for Indian handcrafted furniture-manufacturing industry of Jodhpur, in the state of Rajasthan is used for the purpose of research. The primary aim of my research is to determine the exporting behaviour and difficulties faced for exporting and lack of awareness for exporting and lastly the success factors to be considered in order to enhance the handicraft segment of Indian industries. Based on observation and experiments a primary research was conducted which includes an extensive search and critical evaluation of previously written literature which focussed on SMEs and difficulties they faced in exporting, and based on the literature with cited theories purposeful strategies are construed. There has been work done by many scholars which is concentrated on SMEs and their export performance, in relation to ‘firm characteristics’, ‘difficulties in exporting’ and lastly the ‘success factors’ essential for a manufacturing firm in the field of exporting. These contexts elucidate the various success factors and the general functioning of an SME, and the furniture firms in particular. The research goal is to determine some recommendations and possible strategies, which, upon implementation, might prove beneficial and profitable for Indian furniture-manufacturing SMEs. Considerable amount of variation was discovered between the theories devised from the scholars and responses from the respondents, which were contradictory between the theoretical and the practical concepts of the industry. However, upon thorough analysis and revelation of facts and figures, gained from an in-depth study of the industry, appropriate recommendations have been provided, which are also characterised by constraints like time, distance and cost, not to mention its own share of respondent and interviewer bias.
