description A bioenergy supply chain is formed by many parts which from the raw material, biomass feedstock until the distribution and utilisation. The upstream activity is always managed in a sustainable way in order to be capable enough to support the downstream activity. In this dissertation, the sustainable production of palm oil is focused and researched through problem identification and solving by using the operation management perspective and practices. At first, the global biomass industry is studied and understood in order to have a bigger picture and broader point of view to analyse the biomass situation in Malaysia and identify the challenges & barriers for oil palm production in Malaysia. The challenges and barriers are identified by going through the related information and hypothesis. After that, a case study on Sime Darby Plantation’s sustainable oil palm production is carried out to find how Sime Darby Plantation works on the similar problems and challenges. Finally, the identified challenges through references and hypothesis are discussed together with the Sime Darby Plantation’s management on the sustainable oil palm plantation. During the discussion, the concepts and theory from operation management is observed and some improvements or changes are suggested.
