The aim of this qualitative study was to gain an insight into the influence of uniforms on the self image, pride and concept of professional identity and professional image in pre-registration nurses and whether this had an effect on their performance and clinical practice. This was achieved by carrying out fourteen semi-structured interviews with pre-registration nurses on the masters and Diploma/Degree programme. All interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic content analysis. It was found that uniform raises an issue in a number of areas including, gender, equality, power, and identity. It appears that there are those in nursing who are traditionalists and those that are modernisers; however, it is thought that a combination of the two leads to a balanced professional identity. A uniform has implications on the nurse’s self confidence but also has an impact on their security in their appearance. It was suggested by students that having pride in combination with a good self image and professional identity will lead to better performance and confidence in clinical practice. It is proposed that nursing needs a new image that carefully balances the new professional and modern outlook whilst retaining an appreciation for its heritage in order to project a realistic image to the public and to aid nurses in their formation of a positive professional identity.
