description The main purpose of this dissertation is to determine whether the establishment of Financial Holding Corporations (FHCs) and accession of WTO in 2002 affect the performance of independent and local branches of foreign banks in Taiwan. The research assessed 19 independent and 22 foreign banks from 1999 to 2006. The inputs and outputs are defined according to the intermediation approach. Inputs adopted in this dissertation are deposits, personnel expenses and fixed assets. Outputs are loans, other earning assets and non-interests income. This dissertation adopted the input-oriented DEA approach to derive the efficiency scores including the Technical Efficiency (TE), Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE) and Scale efficiency (SE) by using CCR and BCC model respectively. Subsequently, the DEA-based Malmquist Productive Index (MPI) is also applied to analyse the trends of banks' productivity. The empirical results are as follow: 1. Efficiencies of the independent banks were all reduced after 2002. However, their productivity was improving after 2002. 2. Efficiencies of the foreign banks were all increased after 2002. Furthermore, their productivity growth after 2002 was apparent and seemed to grow continuously.
