Description
Summary:This thesis studied bile acids in the oral delivery of the anti-diabetic compound probucol as therapy for diabetes mellitus and in the application of microencapsulation of pancreatic β- cells. Bile acids improved the stability of the pharmaceutical formulation system containing probucol and enhanced the oral delivery resulting in greater bioavailability, tissue concentrations and glucose lowering effects in diabetic animals. Bile acids also improved the viability and activity of pancreatic β-cells within microcapsules via cellular protective effects.
