In 2009, Gladwell travelled to Afghanistan as an Official War Artist and guest of the Australian Defence Force. From that trip to the frontlines, he produced a series of works for the Australian War Memorial, as well as other works related to the experience of Afghanistan. On 11 April 2014, I was part of a panel discussion with Shaun Gladwell and Associate Professor Jennifer Rutherford, Deputy Director of the Hawke Research Institute, at the Anne and Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide.
