Summary:Pyrolysis-biorefinery shows great promise for the production of liquid fuels and chemicals from non-food lignocellulosic biomasses. Coke formation and catalyst deactivation are among the biggest challenges facing the technology development. This study investigated the formation of coke during the hydrotreatment of bio-oil from the pyrolysis of mallee wood. Bio-oil with externally added sugars and phenolic compounds was also hydrotreated to gain better understanding about the reactions involved in coke formation.
