description This study investigated understanding of diffusion, osmosis and particle theory of matter concepts among 192 pre-service science teachers in Saudi Arabia using a 17-item two-tier multiple choice diagnostic test as well as their attitudes to science using 30 items from the Test of Science-Related Attitudes (TOSRA) instrument. The results suggest that the pre-service teachers had generally better understanding of osmosis and diffusion concepts but very limited understanding of particle theory concepts, while displaying 18 alternative conceptions related to these topics. Their attitudes towards science, however, were generally positive. The findings suggest that greater time and attention needs to be invested in the teaching of particle theory concepts to pre-service teachers to ensure that correct understandings of the related concepts can be passed on from teacher to student.
