Summary:The aim of this study is to investigate ways to improve Indonesian students’ academic writing, particularly to meet the expectations of Australian academics. The research was informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics and samples of students writing was encoded for Field, Tenor and Mode. This was compared with academic and student rankings and perceptions of the same texts. Based on the findings suggestions are made for changes to teaching practice in Indonesian university English courses.
