Malaysia has contributed 20 per cent of the world’s bird’s nest production for this industry. Previous studies have shown that swiftlet nests contain various beneficial ingredients that make bird nests one of the most sought-after items. Due to the high demand, many entrepreneurs are venturing into this field, especially Malays and Chinese. However, there are a number of problems that cause more than 80 per cent of businesses in this field to fail because they do not have the necessary knowledge to start a business. The abandonment of this business could lead to failure and additional losses. This study aims to propose a new mathematical index model that is able to identify factors that influence the success of new entrepreneurs in the bird’s nest industry. This research used a mathematical mixed formulation combining qualitative and quantitative methods (mathematical formulation) by conducting a survey to collect data. The first research question is to identify the nine factors of business creation. Using the systematic literature review (SLR) of the qualitative method, which includes the steps of literature collection and data processing, all factors were identified. This SLR method depends on the factor that is most frequently cited. After determining the factors, data were collected from eight participants who were interviewed individually in Terengganu and Kelantan, including two veterinarians, two college lecturers, and four successful entrepreneurs who produce bird’s nests. The next phase was the transcription of all collected data. The final phase was the analysis and interpretation of the data using ATLAS.ti. After the qualitative approach using the interview method, this study also used a quantitative method by creating a questionnaire on the independent variables. The information from the previously conducted interviews was weighted in the development of the index for business start-ups. The results of the qualitative approach showed that knowledge management and the role of building design and maintenance were discussed extensively by participants, and respondents were positive about both of these factors. The start-up index is derived by using a basic composite index that requires weightage in start-up business as well as the index number. The index number can be obtained by using questionnaires with a 10-point Likert scale. The calculation of the key indicator used for the start-up index shows that entrepreneurs are well equipped to venture into the bird nest swiftlet ranching industry. The existence of a new mathematical index for start-ups for micro-entrepreneurs in the edible bird’s nest industry is strengthened by the fact that they can prepare well before starting their business. Therefore, this new index can be applied to micro-entrepreneurs throughout Malaysia in the future. uuid:7FF54E0D-D50F-469B-B8BC-22CCEFB83429 17466_ae27b57fc8b5bbb.pdf entrepreneurs |
