In response to the lack of appropriate leadership styles among school principals, principals face difficulties in running their schools efficiently due to a lack of experience, knowledge, and leadership expertise. In this study, principal accountability, principal leadership styles, principal knowledge, and principal experience acted as independent variables, while student academic performance acted as the dependent variable. Thus, the study aimed to identify the level of principal leadership in improving student academic performance, to measure the relationship between principal leadership and student academic performance, and to examine the influence of principal leadership on student academic performance from the perceptions of school principals, teachers, and students in Ona-Ara secondary schools, Oyo State, Nigeria. This study employed quantitative methods, and questionnaires were designed and used as instruments for data collection, involving 10 school principals who were purposefully selected, 100 teachers, and 320 students selected through stratified sampling from 10 schools in Ona-Ara. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used to analyze data collected from school principals, teachers, and students. Mean and standard deviation were measured to calculate the level at which principal leadership was able to improve student academic performance. Pearson’s correlation test measured the relationship between principal leadership and student academic performance, while multiple regression analysis was used to measure the influence of principal leadership on student academic performance. The findings of the study reported that principals improved student academic performance at a higher proportion through their accountability, leadership styles, knowledge, and experience. The study also revealed that principal leadership has a significant positive relationship with student academic performance using a two-tailed correlation. The findings further confirmed that principal leadership positively influenced the academic performance of secondary school students based on the model summary, ANOVA, and coefficients in Ona-Ara. The study contributes to education policymakers, principal leadership groups, researchers, teachers, and students, and recommendations were suggested for school principals, educational stakeholders, principal preparation programs, and future researchers.
