Both teachers and students in Jordanian schools often switched words or sentences from English to Arabic from the beginning of the lesson to the end. These phenomena will undermine the role of English as a means of learning and weaken the conversational skills of students, creating a lack of confidence in speaking and acquiring language. Limited practice in speaking the English language may hold back the ability of students to master the English language and fail to understand and study the English language. Therefore, this study aims to investigate secondary school teacher-student code-switching via interactions in speaking classes in Jordanian private secondary schools in the Irbid district, Jordan. The researcher employed a qualitative research design that employs the qualitative approach to collect data, which are observational analysis and semi-structured interviews. Three EFL 10th grade classes were observed in a private secondary school in the Irbid district, Jordan while semi-structured interviews were conducted with six teachers and six students, selected from the three same classes that were observed. All through a purposive sampling procedure was employed for the participants to collect the data. A thematic analysis was used to analyse the data into themes using Atlas.ti version 8.0. The qualitative results of the study showed that students code-switched for several reasons, such as explaining difficult concepts, avoiding misunderstandings, not being able to find the English (L2) equivalent, expressing themselves clearly, and discussing certain topics that can be more appropriate to discuss in Arabic (L1). The results also showed that there are many factors contributing to code-switching including limited ability to communicate in English due to limited vocabulary, expressing oneself clearly, expressing emotions, difficulty in carrying out tasks easily, and lack of self-confidence. The interview findings conducted by the study revealed that teachers expressed a positive perception towards code-switching, in which it is considered as a useful strategy in EFL teaching. The students were found to opt for code-switching as a strategy to keep up with low English proficiency. In view of the above, the study concludes that the use of code-switching is an effective way to simplify information, attract students' attention, use time, and fill in linguistic and cultural gaps among students. The study provided important insights and recommendations for decision-makers and curriculum designers in the Jordanian Ministry of Education and future studies. The study contributed to the students, teachers, EFL course designers, course instructors to pay attention to the phenomenon of code-switching. uuid:44c0eeb0-d61e-4dc6-9d00-068060d60d8f CODE-SWITCHING IN EFL CLASSROOMS AT JORDANIAN PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS (PHD_2024).pdf Thesis
